Bangkok The Siam Society 1976 Paperback Very Good
Second edition. Illustrated, lage 8vo, paperback, pp (10), 169, very slightly worn. [Alan Davidson's copy, with his "fish" bookplate. One of the most important figures in twentieth century culinary writing and scholarship, Davidson was a British diplomat and historian best known for his writing and editing on food and gastronomy. He was the author of the 900-page, encyclopedic The Oxford Companion to Food. In 1948, Davidson joined the Foreign Office and served in diplomatic posts in Washington, Tunis, Brussels, Cairo, the Hague; from 1973 to 1975, he was ambassador to Laos. While living in Tunis, his wife asked him to look for a cookbook on fish because she did not recognize any of the local varieties. Not being able to find one he wrote one himself. The original manuscript was copied with a stencil machine. A copy reached the British cooking guru Elizabeth David, who passed it on to Penguin Books, which published it in 1972 as Mediterranean Seafood. This was followed by Seafood Of South East Asia (1979) and North Atlantic Seafood (1979), for which he travelled throughout the region, gathering thousands of recipes from Portugal to Iceland.]

Very well illustrated, thick quarto, pp 510, a very good copy in a dustwrapper showing the very faintest signs of use. [Large plantings of perennial flowers can cost tens of thousands of dollars in large gardens or public parks. Even smaller-scale designers and landscapers can't afford to guess wrong when setting up flower beds that have to look their best on cue. This is the only book available to provide an authoritative, deeply researched guide to flowering time for more than 450 perennial flowers. No designer, landscaper, or public garden can afford to be without it. "When Perennials Bloom" is based on groundbreaking research on the exact bloom time of particular flowers from around the world - from Moscow to Missouri. Organized alphabetically by flower and including detailed charts and graphs, this book presents a system to predict the groupings of flowers that will reliably bloom at the same time.Introductory chapters explain the seasonal development of various perennial plants, the response of plants to weather conditions, and basic concepts of phenology - the timing of natural phenomena. Detailed descriptions illustrated with stunning photographs, recommendations for garden use, analysis of bloom times, and graphs showing month-by-month bloom time round out this comprehensive title. Whether you're a home gardener who wants to plan an effective perennial border or a nursery, design, or landscape professional whose career survival depends on a plant's peak display, you will find this carefully compiled book to be an indispensable tool.]

20 Auders, Aris G. & Spicer, Derek The Royal Horticultural Society Encyclopedia of Conifers - a comprehensive guide to cultivars and species
Nicosia Kingsblue Publishing & the RHS 2012 1907057153 / 9781907057151 First Edition Pictorial Cover New
Two volumes, very well illustrated, large thick quarto, pp 1507, pictorial cloth, a very good set. Please note that this set weighs ten kilos - substantial extra postage will be required. Shipping to the USA, for instance, will be around £67.00 !! [An absolutely stunning work. The Royal Horticultural Society encyclopedia is a much needed reference book on conifer cultivars and species, both hardy and tropical. The two volumes of this extensive and lavishly illustrated 1,500-page work feature about 8,000 cultivars, over 5,000 photographs and all of the world’s 615 conifer species, plus their subspecies and varieties. There has been an explosion of new cultivars in recent years and this complete reference book includes at least a short mention of all recognized cultivars and species, including synonyms, descriptions and size after 10 years where known. For the cultivars it also include finder or originator, date and country of origin. The species descriptions follow the most recent botanical classification (Farjon, 2010) and cultivar information has been compiled with reference to the RHS International Conifer Register and Checklist, including as yet unpublished data. There is a unique appendix listing all the principle conifer collectors, nurseries, arboreta and individuals responsible for introducing new cultivars over the last three centuries. The encyclopedia continues the fine tradition of conifer cultivar reference works started by Murray Hornibrook in 1923 and added to every 20 - 30 years by subsequent conifer specialists. The high quality photography shows the general appearance of the plants, and in many cases details special features. Many were photographed in summer and winter to show colour and texture changes through the seasons. The book is designed to meet the needs of professionals as well as amateur gardeners.]
