[Carlo Giovanni Maria Denina (1731 - 1813) was an Italian historian. He was born at Revello, Piedmont, in 1731, and was educated at Saluzzo and Turin. In 1753 he was appointed to the chair of humanity at Pignerol, but he was soon compelled by the influence of the Jesuits to retire from it. In 1756 he graduated as doctor in theology, and began authorship with a theological treatise. Promoted to the professorship of humanity and rhetoric in the college of Turin, he published (1769 - 1770) his Delle revoluzioni d'Italia, the work on which his reputation is mainly founded. Collegiate honors accompanied the issue of its successive volumes, which, however, at the same time multiplied his foes and stimulated their hatred.]

12 Gibson, Thomas The Anatomy of Humane Bodies Epitomized Wherein All the Parts of Man's Body, with Their Actions and Uses, Are Succinctly Described, According to the Newest Doctrine of the Most Accurate and Learned Modern Anatomists. The Second edition.
Angel & Crown, St Paul's Churchyard J. Heptinstall, for Thomas Flesher 1684 Second edition Full-Leather Good
Second edition, small thick octavo, pp (14), 590, with the imprimatur leaf, some age-toning and thumbing throughout, a little light staining in places, 16 anatomical plates (of which one is small and folding, repaired at one of the folds), a small neat name and address dated 1954 on the front endpaper, contemporary mottled calf, a little worn, neatly and sympathetically rebacked by Temple Bookbinders. Still an attractive copy of a scarce work. [Thomas Gibson, MD, 1647-1722, was born at Bampton in Westmorland. He graduated doctor of medicine at Leyden, 20th August, 1675, and was admitted a Licentiate of the College of Physicians 26th June, 1676. He is stated in the Annals of the College of Physicians to have been created doctor of medicine by the archbishop of Canterbury, 16th May, 1663 (age 16), and to have been admitted ad eundem, at Cambridge, 5th October, 1671. He was admitted an Honorary Fellow of the College of Physicians 30th September, 1680. Because he was a presbyterian he was removed from the list of Fellows when the college received a new charter under James II in 1687'. He was reinstated after the Glorious Revolution in 1688 when William and Mary came to the throne. He was physician-general to the army 1718-19. His second wife, Elizabeth, was the sixth daughter of Richard Cromwell, briefly Lord Protector (1658-1659)), the son of Oliver Cromwell. His book Anatomy of Humane Bodies epitomized went through eight editions, between 1682-1737, the first being published anonymously. It was a best seller. It was based on a revision of Alexander Read's Manuall of Anatomy (1634), which Gibson acknowledges, and in English, instead of Latin which had been obligatory before censorship and permission from the Stationers Company disappeared during the civil war and interregnum. The beautiful illustrations are taken from Vesalius's anatomical drawings.]

14 Lawson, William (preface by Eleanour Sinclair Rohde) A New Orchard & Garden: or the Best Way for Planting, Graffing and to make any Ground good for a Rich Orchard: Particularly in the North etc. With the Country Housewife's Garden for Herbs of Common Use etc; also The Husbandry of Bees etc
London The Cresset Press 1927 Quarter vellum Good
Facsimile reprint, a few illustrations, square octavo, pp xxvi, 116, top edge gilt, other edges uncut, very occasional light foxing, quarter vellum and boards, slightly worn and marked. Limited numbered edition of 650 copies. [William Lawson (1553/4-1635) was the vicar of Ormesby, a country parish in Yorkshire. First and foremost a religious man who carried out his clerical duties most diligently, he was obviously also a keen gardener with considerable land. A man of some learning, he evidently read widely on agriculture and gardening, and his two works are also scattered with references to the classics. When he died he willed 'all my latine books & mie English books of contraversie' to his son William, which suggests that he may well have owned a relatively substantial library of books for the period. It is a result of forty eight years experience in working a northern garden. Occasionally in the text he refers to the difficulties of this environment. He advises his fellow northerners, for instance, to 'meddle not with Apricockes nor Peaches, nor scarcely with Quinces, which will not like our cold parts'. This book can therefore be credited with being the first to deal with the northern garden.]
