Under the Borneo Sun - a Tawau Story, Chung, Nicholas
9 Chung, Nicholas Under the Borneo Sun - a Tawau Story
Kota Kinabalu 2005 9838121088 / 9789838121088 First Edition Cloth New New
Illustrated, pp 116, a very good copy in dustwrapper. [This is an account of an ordinary man's life set against extraordinary times before, during and after the Second World War in British North Borneo (now Sabah). It charts the history of Tawau and the hard struggle of the author's family enmeshed with events leading to the birth of a nation as seen through the eyes of a son of poor Chinese immigrants. It gives many interesting insights as to how the locals and imperialists (both British and Japanese) interacted in this era. This is also a personal story of hardship, deprivation and heartbreak endured stoically by the family. It depicts the author's life journey, made richer by the many friends and acts of kindness he encountered. Essentially, this is a story of survival against overwhelming odds in the face of man’s cruelty against one another. However, it also brings out happy memories of inherent human decency and care amply demonstrated by numerous individuals, among whom were common fellow citizens, British colonial officials, religious missionaries and even Japanese soldiers of war. In writing this story, the author's aim is to leave a legacy to his English, American and Japanese grandchildren so that they will remember this part of their shared heritage.]

Traumas and Heroism - the European Community in Sarawak During the Pacific War and Japanese Occupation 1941 - 1945, Gin, Ooi Keat
13 Gin, Ooi Keat Traumas and Heroism - the European Community in Sarawak During the Pacific War and Japanese Occupation 1941 - 1945
Sabah Opus Publications 2007 9833987028 / 9789833987023 Cloth New New
NEW. Illustrated, pp xvi, 278, a very good copy in dustwrapper. [From the landings of the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) on the shores of Miri in December 1941 to the liberation of Batu Lintang Prisoner of War and Internment Camp in September 1945 by Australian Kuching Force, Traumas and Heroism offers a unique account of the Pacific War and Japanese Occupation in Sarawak, drawing from a series of personal documents (journals, diaries, letters, notes, etc.) and semi-official reports. Allowing the participants to tell their story offers readers a first-hand account of the traumatic experiences of the wartime years. As most of the documents featured were written during their author’s flight and escape or during incarceration, the accounts have an immediacy that transports the audience to the time of the Japanese Occupation. Traumas and Heroism is a book of two tales. The first is the traumatic story of a community living in complacent affluence being suddenly jolted from a comfortable, pleasurable lifestyle and literally thrown into an internment camp where the inmates barely survived an existence of filth, hunger and exhaustion aggravated by the daily sadistic beatings, ill-treatment, and the constant fear of death from disease, malnutrition or cold-blooded massacre. Those who did not survive were buried on 'Boot Hill'—peace for some, while the graves of others were plundered for valuables. Those who violated rules and regulations or were perceived to be subversive elements were severely punished by the dreaded Kempeitai, the Japanese military police. The second part of the story is that of man’s intuitive heroic character, which was very much alive despite the regime of terror within the barbed wire fencing of the prisoner of war and internment camp. Under the very noses of their Japanese captors, a few British POWs with nerves of steel used their ingenuity and resourcefulness not only to build a radio, but also a generator to run it. News on the developments of the war (particularly setbacks to Japanese forces) provided much needed hope to the camp inmates.

Three Came Home, KEITH, Agnes Newton
18 KEITH, Agnes Newton Three Came Home
Sabah Opus Publications 2008 9833987281 / 9789833987283 Paperback New
(Originally published in 1946). New facsimile reprint, pp xvi, 317, illustrated with line drawings by the author, paperback, a very good copy. [This is a touching sequel to the first book, Land Below the Wind, where Keith wrote of her early impressions and experiences in Borneo. Three Came Home is as different as war is to peace. It recounts the internment of Agnes Keith and her son as prisoners-of-war during the Japanese Occupation of Borneo. It is an unforgettable journey of the human heart as the book weaves through periods of emotional despair, hatred, desperation, resignation, and finally, mere documentation of a war that changed the lives of thousands who lived through it. This story was written on pieces of paper stored in secret hiding places and assembled when Borneo was finally liberated. The end of the war did not bring the end of her relationship with Borneo. She returned and much later published White Man Returns, the concluding part of a trilogy on her life on this island.]
