A Book of White Flowers : Twenty-Four Paintings, Cameron, Elizabeth (foreword by Christopher Lloyd)
17 Cameron, Elizabeth (foreword by Christopher Lloyd) A Book of White Flowers : Twenty-Four Paintings
Frenich, Foss K.D. Duval 1980 First Edition Cloth and boards in slipcase Very Good Elizabeth Cameron Signed by Artist
Small folio, pp 8 + 24 fine colour plates, extremely clean internally, cloth-backed pictorial boards in very good condition, the glassine dustwrapper is a little wrinkled, otherwise a very good copy in the original slipcase which is a little marked overall. [Edition limited to 250 numbered copies, signed by the artist.] RARE. [ Elizabeth Cameron became one of Britainís leading botanical artists after making a successful career as a frozen food entrepreneur. She first learned to paint from her governess, but received more formal teaching at the Slade and at St Johnís Wood Art School in London. In 1939 she exhibited landscapes and portraits at both the Royal Academy in London and the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh; but during the war she put aside her brushes and joined the ATS as an ambulance driver. She began painting flowers in watercolour in 1970. She was particularly inspired by the roses, tulips, oriental poppies and rhododendrons at the famous Scottish gardens of Brodick, Glenarn and Inverewe, as well as by the Cameronsí own garden, Allangrange, on the Black Isle. The Camerons travelled the world - Nepal, Kashmir, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, North and South America - seeking interesting specimens for Allangrange, a three-acre garden plus woodland which was occasionally (but is no longer) open to the public. Meanwhile, her botanical paintings were becoming increasingly successful. These were marketed as reproductions by Allangrange Prints, a business she set up with her daughter Kirstie; and in later years Elizabeth Cameronís slight, white-haired figure became familiar at the Allangrange stand at Chelsea Flower Show, where she insisted on keeping to her daily routine of an afternoon nap. On one occasion at Chelsea she was sleeping in the shade of a tree and awoke to find distressed tourists and paramedics poised to revive her; she later made use of a small sign indicating: "Not dead, only sleeping." Her botanical paintings were shown at the Hunt-Mellon Botanical Institute in Pittsburgh (1983), and at the Horticultural Societies of New York (1984) and Boston (1985). She had a number of solo exhibitions in London, and Allangrange Prints regularly took a stand not only at Chelsea but also at the French equivalent, the Courson Flower Show, and at Hampton Court. She also sold at events such as game fairs and the Burghley and Badminton horse trials. She received three Gold and three Silver medals from the Royal Horticultural Society in recognition of her accuracy of botanical detail and pictorial excellence.]

Artists' Kew - an exhibition of contemporary works., Cloake, J. & Strong, R.
19 Cloake, J. & Strong, R. Artists' Kew - an exhibition of contemporary works.
Asgill House trust & Friends of RBG Kew 2006 1842461435 / 9781842461433 First Edition Cloth New New
NEW. Very well illustrated, small slim quarto, pp 96. a very good copy in dustwrapper. [Artists' Kew reveals Kew in its charming detail as well as in its full natural beauty by the Thames. It is about people too: their interaction with those settings, and the settings in turn as public places for simple relaxation and fun as well as the backdrop for enjoyment of botanical delights. Indeed, Kew today is more popular than ever: with visitors to the Royal Botanic Gardens and The National Archives, and as a residential community. More than 50 artists particpated in the exhibition on which Artist's Kew is based. The charitable share of proceeds from the sale of their work was in support of Kew's plans to construct a purpose-built gallery to display the world's most important collection of botanical art and manuscripts. The contemporary art shown in this book builds upon Kew's eclectic tradition: to inspire, to excite, to strengthen the foundations of our living heritage and to foster understanding of the breadth of activity in the Royal Botanic Gardens.]

There are almost 70 known species, all of which have their own attractive qualities appealing to growers, but many species are rare in the wild. Recent evidence has been synthesized to produce a modern classification of the genus. Chapters on the hybridization, cultivation (by Michael Tibbes), and conservation are also included. This treatment is a framework for future research as well as a sound guide to growers of these endlessly fascinating orchids.} [N.B. Book is very heavy !
