Classic Gardens - The French Style, Babelon, Jean-Pierre; Chamblas-Ploton, Mic & Leroux, Jean-Baptiste
8 Babelon, Jean-Pierre; Chamblas-Ploton, Mic & Leroux, Jean-Baptiste Classic Gardens - The French Style
London Thames & Hudson 2000 0500051030x First UK edition Cloth Very Good Slightly worn and rubbed
Very well illustrated, very large quarto, pp 298, the slightest of wear to the cloth, but a very good copy in a slightly worn dustwrapper. Very heavy - extra postage will be needed. [Formal gardens in the French style are often thought to be some of the most ambitious works ever created. Born of a taste for regularity and symmetry and a desire to tame nature, they are full of rich visual imagery and continue to inspire modern garden designers. This volume takes the reader on a tour through Europe and Russia - from Versailles in France and Quelez in Portugal to Peterhof in Russia. The book also expounds on the history of this style of gardening, from its beginnings in the Middle Ages to the present day, exploring who commissioned the gardens, who designed them and their purpose.]

William Robinson - the Wild Gardener, Bisgrove, Richard
11 Bisgrove, Richard William Robinson - the Wild Gardener
London Frances Lincoln 2008 0711225427 / 9780711225428 First Edition Cloth Very Good Very Good
Very well illustrated, large quarto, pp 256, a very good copy in dustwrapper. Very scarce. [In this book Richard Bisgrove analyses William Robinson and his remarkable contribution to gardening. Robinson and Gertrude Jekyll were almost exact contemporaries and each made enormous contributions to the English garden - and so to the gardens of the whole English-speaking and Anglophile world - but in rather different ways. Robinson, more than any other gardener, was responsible for sweeping away the carpet bedding of the Victorians and promoting a more relaxed style using hardy plants. His voluminous writings have been hugely influential. The English Flower Garden (1883) has been described as 'the most widely read and influential gardening book ever written'. The Wild Garden(1870) runs it close. As a man he was something of a paradox - an Irish bachelor who is widely regarded as the father of the English flower garden, a theorist who scorned theorizing and an author who wrote with passion - and simultaneously - about the technicalities of mushroom cultivation and the picturesque treatment of a thousand-acre estate.]

Over the past millennium, plant hunters have introduced what we now consider everyday plants, such as rhododendrons from China and gladiolus from Africa and exotics such as the monkey puzzle tree from Brazil. Respected garden historian Maggie Campbell-Culver has researched the provenance and often strange stories of many of the thousands of plants which add colour and beauty to our gardens to produce a gorgeous and valuable book.]
