BIOLOGICAL FLORA OF THE BRITISH ISLES APPROXIMATELY 180 PARTS, (Desmond, Ray. Donald, Duncan. Mathew, Brian.)
3 (Desmond, Ray. Donald, Duncan. Mathew, Brian.) BIOLOGICAL FLORA OF THE BRITISH ISLES APPROXIMATELY 180 PARTS
Paperback Good
A splendid collection of approximately 180 of these accounts. This accounts for over half of those published, and virtually none of these is now in print. Publication is still ongoing, but those offered here were published between 1945 and 1994. All are slim paperbacks, were reprinted from Journal of Ecology, and appearance varies slightly over the years - the earlier issues being straight extracts, and the later ones in a variety of covers. The detail within each is excellent, with descriptions, habitats, communities, distribution maps, phenology, floral biology, history and extensive references. For many species the plants is put in its European context also, with many interesting notes. Condition: only slightly worn generally, with a few of the earlier issues being a little creased or worn. [This series of articles is a separate section of autecological accounts, originally published in Journal of Ecology alongside the journal’s other articles, but with its own Editor and team of Associate Editors. The Editor of the Biological Flora series, Anthony Davy, is Professor of Ecology at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK. Over three hundred accounts of the Flora of the British Isles have been published to date. Accounts cover both common and endangered species.]. Molecular Methods in Ecology, Baker, Allan J. (editor)
11 Baker, Allan J. (editor) Molecular Methods in Ecology
Oxford Blackwell Science 2000 0632034378 / 9780632034376 First Edition Paperback Good
Octavo, pp x, 337, very clean internally, paperback, upper cover creased, otherwise only the slightest signs of use. [The incorporation of molecular methods in ecological research has added an exciting new dimension to conventional studies, and opened windows into previously intractable areas of research, at the interface between ecology and genetics. Using these new methods it has now become routine to use genetic markers to study ecological phenomena, from molecular sexing of individuals and parentage of offspring, through to population structure of species and phylogenetic relationships of taxa. These methods have stimulated an explosion of empirical and analytical developments in molecular ecology, which have in turn, increasingly attracted students and professional biologists eager to employ them in their studies. Molecular Methods in Ecology traces the development of molecular ecology by reviewing basic molecular biological techniques and earlier methods such as protein electrophoresis, DNA–DNA hybridisation, restriction analysis of DNA, and DNA fingerprinting. Later chapters review methods using newer classes of markers such as microsatellites, introns, MHC, SSRs and AFLP markers in plants and molecular sexing in animals. The strengths and limitations of methods are discussed and guidance is provided in selecting the most appropriate methods for particular problems in ecology. This book will provide both postgraduates and researchers with a guide to choosing and employing appropriate methodologies for successful research in the field of molecular ecology. Provides up–to–date summaries of the latest molecular approaches in this rapidly expanding field. Gives guidance on the appropriate choice of methods for particular problems in ecology, and their strengths and limitations. Provides brief laboratory protocols for each molecular method and summaries of software available for analysis of data in molecular ecology. Outlines examples of the latest research results from studies of both plants and animals, integrated within the framework of molecular ecology.]

13 Beerling, D.J. & Woodward, F.I. Vegetation and the Terrestrial Carbon Cycle - modelling the first 400 million years
Cambridge University Press 2001 0521801966 / 9780521801966 First Edition Boards Very Good
Illustrated with charts and plans, large 8vo, pp x, 405, extremely clean internally, boards showing very slight signs of use. [Plants have colonised and modified the World's surface for the last 400 million years. In this book the authors demonstrate that an understanding of the role of vegetation in the terrestrial carbon cycle during this time can be gained by linking the key mechanistic elements of present day vegetation processes to models of the global climate during different geological eras. The resulting interactive simulations of climate and vegetation processes tie in with observable geological data, such as the distributions of coals and evaporites, supporting the validity of the authors' approach. Simulation of possible conditions in future centuries are also presented, providing valuable predictions of the status of the Earth's vegetation and carbon cycle at a time of global warming.]

Evolution and Ecology - the pace of life (Sir John Burnett's copy), Bennett, K.D
16 Bennett, K.D Evolution and Ecology - the pace of life (Sir John Burnett's copy)
Cambridge University Press 1997 9521399211 Paperback Good
A few maps and charts within the text, octavo, pp xvi, 241, very clean internally, paperback, covers lightly creased, otherwise a very good copy. [From the library of Sir John Burnett, with his signature on the front endpaper. A distinguished academic career and a lifelong interest in fungi, botany and nature conservation made him the ideal champion for biological recording in the UK. He held that effective nature conservation could be achieved only if good quality information about species and their habitats was accessible to all who needed it - a belief that made him perfectly suited to run the National Biodiversity Network, founded in 2000. He was convinced that academics with high administrative posts must continue with some personal research, in his case on the myxomycetes.]
