Paris Diffusion 1987 2950145108 / 9782950145109 Paperback Very Good
Illustrated, large 8vo, pp 211, paperback, a very good copy. [Alan Davidson's copy, with his "fish" bookplate. One of the most important figures in twentieth century culinary writing and scholarship, Davidson was a British diplomat and historian best known for his writing and editing on food and gastronomy. He was the author of the 900-page, encyclopedic The Oxford Companion to Food. In 1948, Davidson joined the Foreign Office and served in diplomatic posts in Washington, Tunis, Brussels, Cairo, the Hague; from 1973 to 1975, he was ambassador to Laos. While living in Tunis, his wife asked him to look for a cookbook on fish because she did not recognize any of the local varieties. Not being able to find one he wrote one himself. The original manuscript was copied with a stencil machine. A copy reached the British cooking guru Elizabeth David, who passed it on to Penguin Books, which published it in 1972 as Mediterranean Seafood. This was followed by Seafood Of South East Asia (1979) and North Atlantic Seafood (1979), for which he travelled throughout the region, gathering thousands of recipes from Portugal to Iceland.]

Octavo, various diagrams and charts within the text, pp xii, 394, paperback, a very good copy indeed. [Trace gases are those that are present in the atmosphere at relatively low concentrations. Small changes in their concentrations can have profound implications for major atmospheric fluxes, and thereore, can be used as indicators in studies of global change, global biogeochemical cycling and global warming. This new how–to guide will detail the concepts and techniques involved in the detection and measurement of trace gases, and the impact they have on ecological studies. Introductory chapters look at the role of trace gases in global cycles, while later chapters go on to consider techniques for the measurement of gases in various environments and at a range of scales.]

[From the library of Sir John Burnett, with his signature on the front endpaper. A distinguished academic career and a lifelong interest in fungi, botany and nature conservation made him the ideal champion for biological recording in the UK. He held that effective nature conservation could be achieved only if good quality information about species and their habitats was accessible to all who needed it - a belief that made him perfectly suited to run the National Biodiversity Network, founded in 2000. He was convinced that academics with high administrative posts must continue with some personal research, in his case on the myxomycetes.]

An Introduction to Crop Physiology, Milthorpe, F.L. & Moorby, J.
129 Milthorpe, F.L. & Moorby, J. An Introduction to Crop Physiology
Cambridge University Press 1974 0521202604 / 9780521202602 First Edition Cloth Very Good Very Slightly Worn
8vo, pp x, 202, a small letter "J" on the title page, otherwise an excellent copy in a very slightly worn and price-clipped dustwrapper. [It provides an understanding of the ways in which the various physiological processes are integrated to produce the responses shown by whole plants growing in the variable environment in the field, whilst stressing the quantitative aspects of these relationships. This was the first general text to attempt such a treatment, thereby digesting much material that had been found only in research papers or detailed monographs and complementing the reductionist approach of most standard texts of plant physiology. Most of the subject matter concerns agricultural systems, but many of the concepts and approaches are applicable to more complex natural ecosystems. Emphasis is placed on integrating knowledge from many sources and on trying to assess quantitatively the importance of each component. The result is a comprehensive account making the book a valuable background for all interested in the study of plants in the field.]
