An Introduction to Crop Physiology, Milthorpe, F.L. & Moorby, J.
121 Milthorpe, F.L. & Moorby, J. An Introduction to Crop Physiology
Cambridge University Press 1974 0521202604 / 9780521202602 First Edition Cloth Very Good Very Slightly Worn
8vo, pp x, 202, a small letter "J" on the title page, otherwise an excellent copy in a very slightly worn and price-clipped dustwrapper. [It provides an understanding of the ways in which the various physiological processes are integrated to produce the responses shown by whole plants growing in the variable environment in the field, whilst stressing the quantitative aspects of these relationships. This was the first general text to attempt such a treatment, thereby digesting much material that had been found only in research papers or detailed monographs and complementing the reductionist approach of most standard texts of plant physiology. Most of the subject matter concerns agricultural systems, but many of the concepts and approaches are applicable to more complex natural ecosystems. Emphasis is placed on integrating knowledge from many sources and on trying to assess quantitatively the importance of each component. The result is a comprehensive account making the book a valuable background for all interested in the study of plants in the field.]

In 1948, Davidson joined the Foreign Office and served in diplomatic posts in Washington, Tunis, Brussels, Cairo, the Hague; from 1973 to 1975, he was ambassador to Laos. While living in Tunis, his wife asked him to look for a cookbook on fish because she did not recognize any of the local varieties. Not being able to find one he wrote one himself. The original manuscript was copied with a stencil machine. A copy reached the British cooking guru Elizabeth David, who passed it on to Penguin Books, which published it in 1972 as Mediterranean Seafood. This was followed by Seafood Of South East Asia (1979) and North Atlantic Seafood (1979), for which he travelled throughout the region, gathering thousands of recipes from Portugal to Iceland.]

A Great British Veterinarian Forgotten: James Beart Simonds, 1810-1904., Pattison, Iain
138 Pattison, Iain A Great British Veterinarian Forgotten: James Beart Simonds, 1810-1904.
London Allen Lane, The Penguin Press 1990 0851314910 / 9780851314914 First Edition Cloth As New
LIMITED EDITION OF 750 COPIES. One illustration, pp (2),168, excellent copy in brown cloth. [Postage will be reduced.]. {James Beart, brought up by his grand-parents at Bungay, was educated at the Bungay grammar school, and entered the Veterinary College in London as a student on 7 Jan. 1828. He received his diploma to practise in March 1829, and succeeded to his uncle Samuel's business as a veterinary surgeon at Bimgay. In 1836 he migrated to Twickenham, and shortly after took a share in organising the scientific work connected with the animals of the farm of the then newly established English Agricultural Society, of which he became an ordinary member on 25 July 1838 (honorary member, 3 April 1849; foundation life governor, 5 March 1890). In 1842 he was appointed to a new professorship of cattle pathology at the Veterinary College in Camden Town, and was made consulting veterinary surgeon to the Royal Agricultural Society (a position he held for sixty-two years until his death). Settling in London, and disposing of his practice at Twickenham, he was active in the movement for obtaining the charter which was granted on 8 March 1844 to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, of which in due course (18623), he became president. He took a prominent part in the efforts of the Royal Agricultural Society to popularise information amongst farmers as to the diseases of animals, and he investigated their causes and means of prevention. In 1857 he carried out an inquiry on the Continent into the cattle plague, which was then committing great ravages, and made a report of eighty-three pages thereon. His information proved useful on a sudden outbreak of the same disease in London in June 1865. The privy council office, owing to doubt of its legal powers, delayed the issue of an order for the slaughtering and burial in quicklime of all diseased animals, until the infection had spread over a great part of England. A veterinary department was improvised at the privy council office to deal with the matter. Simonds was appointed chief inspector and professional adviser, and amongst his helpers was Professor (afterwards Sir) George Thomas Brown [q. v. Suppl. II]. After the stamping out of the outbreak of cattle plague, which was estimated to have cost five millions sterling in money loss alone, it was decided to continue the veterinary department as a permanent branch of the council office, and Simonds remained at its head until November 1871, when he resigned in order to become principal of the Royal Veterinary College in succession to Professor Charles Spooner. Owing to failing health, he retired in June 1881 on a pension, removing to the Isle of Wight. He remained senior consulting veterinary surgeon to the Royal Agricultural Society until his death, at the age of ninety-four years, on 5 July 1904.}

Frontispiece, octavo, pp 240, a very good copy in dustwrapper. [Sir John McFadyean (1853 - 1941], was a Veterinary Surgeon and Professor of Veterinary science. He was Principal of and a Professor of the Royal Veterinary College during 1894-1927. For the first few years after leaving school he worked on his father's farm but in October 1874 he entered the Dick Veterinary College at Edinburgh from where he graduated in April 1876. He was appointed lecturer in anatomy at his old College in the fall of the same year and from then until his retirement in 1927, he was engaged in teaching. In 1884, he published his first book, a text on the anatomy of the horse and followed it three years later by one on the osteology and the arthrology of domesticated animals. About this time however, his interests became fixed on bacteriology and pathology and the subsequent sections of comparative anatomy were never completed. He became the first British veterinary bacteriologist and he retained that position throughout his life. In 1888 he originated the "Journal of Comparative Pathology and Therapeutics" which he edited until the outbreak of the Second World War. He worked during his life with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.]
