One of the most important figures in twentieth century culinary writing and scholarship, Davidson was a British diplomat and historian best known for his writing and editing on food and gastronomy. He was the author of the 900-page, encyclopedic The Oxford Companion to Food. In 1948, Davidson joined the Foreign Office and served in diplomatic posts in Washington, Tunis, Brussels, Cairo, the Hague; from 1973 to 1975, he was ambassador to Laos. While living in Tunis, his wife asked him to look for a cookbook on fish because she did not recognize any of the local varieties. Not being able to find one he wrote one himself. The original manuscript was copied with a stencil machine. A copy reached the British cooking guru Elizabeth David, who passed it on to Penguin Books, which published it in 1972 as Mediterranean Seafood. This was followed by Seafood Of South East Asia (1979) and North Atlantic Seafood (1979), for which he travelled throughout the region, gathering thousands of recipes from Portugal to Iceland.]

The Agrarian History of England and Wales. Volume 1 (1) - Prehistory, Thirsk, Joan & Piggott, Stuart (editors)
171 Thirsk, Joan & Piggott, Stuart (editors) The Agrarian History of England and Wales. Volume 1 (1) - Prehistory
Cambridge University Press 1981 0521087414 / 9780521087414 First Edition Cloth As New Very Slightly Worn
A few illustrations, large 8vo, pp xxii, 451, a very small neat name and address on the front endpaper otherwise extremely clean internally, green cloth in excellent condition, in a very slightly worn dustwrapper with a slightly faded spine. [The agrarian history of Britain begins not with the earliest written documents but with the archaeological evidence marking the advent of the first agriculturalists from the European continent before 3000BC. The foundations of the farming community, which was encountered by the Romans and the subsequent Germanic settlers, were laid by stone-using peoples growing cereal crops and domesticating animals, and the later development of metal technologies enabled these peasant communities to intensify their exploitation of the natural environment. This volume was originally published in two parts, the first edited by Stuart Piggott and the second by H. P. R. Finberg. Part II was actually published in 1972, with the first following in 1981. The volume surveys, for the whole of Britain, this evolution of the man-made landscape over the period of some three millennia before the Roman conquest, utilising in particular the surviving evidence in the British countryside, unique in Europe, for the agrarian pattern of prehistoric settlement.]

The Olive - Tree of Civilization, Train, John
174 Train, John The Olive - Tree of Civilization
Woodbridge Antique Collectors' Club 2004 1851494731 / 9781851494736 First Edition Pictorial laminated boards Very Good
Well illustrated, large slim 8vo, pp 96, very clean internally, pictorial boards, a tiny nick at the top of the rear cover, otherwise virtually as new. [The Olive has a rich and varied history. The gnarled tree and its fruits has been extolled by bards from Ovid and Homer to Kipling, Tennyson and Nerua. What other fruit provides light, is a fundamental ingredient in perfume and adds joy and flavour at the table? The ancients knew these virtues, and olive oil became a key to their religious and political ceremonies, from the temples of Ra in Egypt where lamps burned olive oil, to the temple of Soloman, where kings were anointed with oil based ointments. Christ was offered a sip of oil on the cross; Hanukah is at its origin a festival to celebrate olive oil; the tree and its oil are found in the Koran. Today the oil is worshipped by chefs for its flavours and its colours. For decades, cooks and anthropologists have divided Europe along an olive oil/butter boundary; that line is vanishing as olive oil spreads around the globe. This book explores and brings to life the olives's glorious past, with chapters on the fruit's role in mythology, religion and ancient civilisation. It takes the reader on a tour of cultivation sites and illuminates the complex culture of olive oil commerce. Lovely illustrations of nature, human labour, tools and art accompany the text, revealing the olive in all its hues and guises.]

Multitrophic Level Interactions, Tscharntke, Teja & Hawkins, Bradford A. (editors)
175 Tscharntke, Teja & Hawkins, Bradford A. (editors) Multitrophic Level Interactions
Cambridge University Press 2002 0521791103 / 9780521791106 First Edition Pictorial laminated boards Very Good
A few illustrations and charts within the text, pp viii, 274, laminated boards, a very good copy. [The multitrophic level approach to ecology addresses the complexity of food webs much more realistically than the traditional focus on simple systems and interactions. Only in the last few decades have ecologists become interested in the nature of more complex systems including tritrophic interactions between plants, herbivores and natural enemies. Plants may directly influence the behaviour of their herbivores' natural enemies, ecological interactions between two species are often indirectly mediated by a third species, landscape structure directly affects local tritrophic interactions and below-ground food webs are vital to above-ground organisms. The relative importance of top-down effects (control by predators) and bottom-up effects (control by resources) must also be determined. These interactions are explored in this exciting volume by expert researchers from a variety of ecological fields. This book provides a much-needed synthesis of multitrophic level interactions and serves as a guide for future research for ecologists of all descriptions.]

The Origin, Variation, Immunity and Breeding of Cultivated Plants [Sir John Burnett's copy], Vavilov, N.I. (translated by K. Starr Chester)
180 Vavilov, N.I. (translated by K. Starr Chester) The Origin, Variation, Immunity and Breeding of Cultivated Plants [Sir John Burnett's copy]
Walthan, Mass. Chronica Botanica Company 1950 First American Edition. Paperback Fair
Illustrated, large 8vo, pp xviii, 364, a little thumbed and dog-eared throughout, a few lightly turned corners, paperback, covers faded and slightly worn. [From the library of Sir John Burnett, with his signature on the front cover. A distinguished academic career and a lifelong interest in fungi, botany and nature conservation made him the ideal champion for biological recording in the UK. He held that effective nature conservation could be achieved only if good quality information about species and their habitats was accessible to all who needed it - a belief that made him perfectly suited to run the National Biodiversity Network, founded in 2000. He was convinced that academics with high administrative posts must continue with some personal research, in his case on the myxomycetes.]
