Pyrethrum Flowers, Gnadinger, G.B.
81 Gnadinger, G.B. Pyrethrum Flowers
Minneapolis McLauchlin Gormley King Co. 1945 Second edition Cloth Good
Second edition, third printing. Illustrated, large octavo, pp xvi, 380, slightly used internally, a tiny signature on the front endpaper, cloth a little rubbed and slightly worn, head and tail of spine slightly pulled. [The history of pyrethrum usually starts in 1847 with the mention of the species Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium found growing in Dalmatia (now Croatia). Prior to that it is thought that pyrethrum passed into Europe from Persia along the silk route although details of the particular chrysanthemum flower are not known. During the latter half of the 19th century ‘Dalmatian Insect Powder’ was sold in most pharmacies throughout Europe and in 1885 dried pyrethrum flowers were exported to the USA. By 1913 some 500 tonnes were shipped to the USA but the advent of World War 1 saw this trade cease and replaced by shipments from Japan where pyrethrum had been grown since 1886. At this time the main uses for the ground pyrethrum flower was the control of body lice on humans and animals and crawling insects in the home. Early methods of extraction was, for example, by percolating the ground flowers with kerosene which was then formulated as space sprays for use against houseflies and mosquitoes. It was not until 1924 that the first glimpses of pyrethrum chemistry were revealed by Staudinger and Ruzicka who published a now classic series of papers, summarising their discoveries from 1910 onwards, indicating that the insecticidal properties were due to two esters named Pyrethrin I and Pyrethrin II. Their work was studied in the UK by F Tattersfield, working at Rothamsted Experimental Station at Harpenden, who undertake a fundamental study of pyrethrum and published a series of papers between 1924 and 1935. At the same time, in the USA, C B Gnadinger also embarked on a study of pyrethrum and published a series of papers from 1929 to 1936 culminating in the publication of the first pyrethrum book ‘Pyrethrum Flowers’ in 1933, and the second edition in 1936. Both Tattersfield and Gnadinger provided a firm scientific foundation to pyrethrum research which has continued to the present.]

Tawau - the making of a tropical community, Goodlet, Ken
84 Goodlet, Ken Tawau - the making of a tropical community
Kota Kinabalu Opus Publications 2010 9833987389 / 9789833987382 First Edition Cloth As New As New
Illustrated with black and white photographs, pp viii, 362, a very good copy in dustwrapper. [The story of Tawau and its people is only around 130 years old. People alive today, including this author, have known those who were present at the very start of a recognisable settlement at the mouth of the Tawau River. Ken Goodlet’s interviews cover around 21 linguistic groups in those early days, making this record of Tawau rainbow-coloured in its diversity. The book shows that Tawau has had at least two natural advantages: its location and its natural wealth. Situated at the meeting point of three states that were formerly very different (and competing) colonies, Tawau has been a haven of prosperity and peace, first under the British and then as part of Malaysia. This has attracted trade and immigration (and, at times, envy) not only from far distant Japan and China, but from the Dutch East Indies (later, Indonesia) to its immediate south and from the Spanish and American and, later, independent Philippines to its east. Tawau’s natural wealth, evidenced in a favourable climate, large pockets of excellent soil and coal deposits, has provided residents with jungle produce, then mining and timber, then rubber and hemp and cocoa, and finally oil palm prosperity, augmented by a host of less important agricultural products. The book shows how this has led to extensive migration and capital investment and to the growth of a diverse agriculture-based economy with a complex infrastructure. While previously unimagined wealth has brought better health and a higher standard of living, inevitably it has brought problems - unsustainable exploitation of natural resources, illegal immigration, wealth inequity and loss of some community values. But the final chapters make clear the present is a better world for most than it was at any time in the past.]

The Culture of Flowers, Goody, Jack
85 Goody, Jack The Culture of Flowers
Cambridge University Press 1993 0521414415 / 9780521414418 First Edition Cloth Very Good Very Slightly Worn
A few illustrations, large thick 8vo, pp xviii, 462, a very good copy in a very slightly worn dustwrapper. This hardback edition is now becoming quite scarce. [Jack Goody's book takes as its theme the symbolic and transactional uses of flowers in secular life and religious ritual from ancient Egypt to modern times. He links the use of flowers to the rise of advanced systems of agriculture, the growth of social stratification, and the spread of luxury goods, looking at the history of aesthetic horticulture in Europe and Asia. Other themes which emerge are the role of written texts in building up a culture of flowers; the importance of trade and communications in disseminating and transforming attitudes to flowers; the rejection on puritanical grounds of flowers and their artistic representation, and the multiplicity of meanings which flowers possess. Written from a broad temporal and geographical perspective, this original and wide-ranging book will appeal not only to anthropologists and social historians but also to anyone interested in flowers and their symbolic function across the centuries.]

A very few illustrations and maps, pp xxx, 414, thick paperback, spine faded, covers very slightly worn, a label and neat original price inside front cover. SCARCE. [Alan Davidson's copy, with his "fish" bookplate. One of the most important figures in twentieth century culinary writing and scholarship, Davidson was a British diplomat and historian best known for his writing and editing on food and gastronomy. He was the author of the 900-page, encyclopedic The Oxford Companion to Food. In 1948, Davidson joined the Foreign Office and served in diplomatic posts in Washington, Tunis, Brussels, Cairo, the Hague; from 1973 to 1975, he was ambassador to Laos. While living in Tunis, his wife asked him to look for a cookbook on fish because she did not recognize any of the local varieties. Not being able to find one he wrote one himself. The original manuscript was copied with a stencil machine. A copy reached the British cooking guru Elizabeth David, who passed it on to Penguin Books, which published it in 1972 as Mediterranean Seafood. This was followed by Seafood Of South East Asia (1979) and North Atlantic Seafood (1979), for which he travelled throughout the region, gathering thousands of recipes from Portugal to Iceland.]
