Sex Determination in Plants [Sir John Burnett's copy], Ainsworth, C.C.
4 Ainsworth, C.C. Sex Determination in Plants [Sir John Burnett's copy]
Oxford and Washington BioS Scientific Publishers 1999 185996-421 First Edition Pictorial boards As New
A few illustrations, pp xvi, 221, pictorial boards, an excellent copy. {Indispensable for all plant biologists, this is a fascinating and thorough examination of those factors which affect the sex determination of plant species, describing all of the main classes of plant with unisexual flowers hermaphrodite, monoecious and dioecious}. [From the library of Sir John Burnett, with his signature on the front endpaper. A distinguished academic career and a lifelong interest in fungi, botany and nature conservation made him the ideal champion for biological recording in the UK. He held that effective nature conservation could be achieved only if good quality information about species and their habitats was accessible to all who needed it - a belief that made him perfectly suited to run the National Biodiversity Network, founded in 2000. He was convinced that academics with high administrative posts must continue with some personal research, in his case on the myxomycetes.]

7 Cronk, Quentin C.B.; Bateman, Richard M. & Hawkins, Julie A. Developmental Genetics and Plant Evolution (The Systematics Association Special Volume Series 65)
London Taylor & Francis 2002 0415257913 / 9780415257916 First Edition Paperback Very Good
Large thick 8vo, a few illustrations, pp xvi, 542,fore-edge slightly marked, paperback, very slight signs of wear to the covers, but overall a very good copy. {A heavy book - extra postage may be needed}. [A benchmark text, Developmental Genetics and Plant Evolution integrates the recent revolution in the molecular-developmental genetics of plants with mainstream evolutionary thought. It reflects the increasing cooperation between strongly genomics-influenced researchers, with their strong grasp of technology, and evolutionary morphogenetists and systematists who are more deeply rooted in comparative biology and patterns of plant evolution. The book discusses our increasing understanding of gene function and expression, along with modern phylogenies. It integrates morphological and molecular data to highlight specific key transitions in plant evolution that warrant additional intensive study. Furthermore, it explores increasing knowledge of the physical expression of plant development from disciplines such as anatomy and paleobotany. Rather than focus on the technical aspects of plant genomics, this book provides genuinely integrated explanations of plant evolution. The distinguished panel of contributors has succeeded in capturing a demanding subject in an accessible volume for a wide range of professional botanists and students in developmental biology, applied molecular biology, molecular evolution, morphogenesis, organismal botany, and theoretical systematics.]

The Gene for Gene Relationship in Plant-Parasite Interactions, Crute, I.R.; Holub, E.B. & Burdon, J.J. (eds)
8 Crute, I.R.; Holub, E.B. & Burdon, J.J. (eds) The Gene for Gene Relationship in Plant-Parasite Interactions
Wallingford CAB International 1997 0851991645 / 9780851991641 First Edition Laminated boards Very Good
8vo, pp xiv, 427, a few light pencillings in the text, tiny bumps to the lower corners, otherwise a very good copy. [Genetics has transformed plant pathology on two occasions: first when Mendelian genetics enabled the discovery that disease resistance was a heritable trait in plants, and secondly when Flor proposed the "gene-for-gene" hypothesis to explain his observations of plant-parasite interactions, based on his work on flax rust in North Dakota starting in the 1930s. Our knowledge of the genetics of disease resistance and host-pathogen coevolution is now entering a new phase as a result of the cloning of the first resistance genes. This book provides a broad review of developments in this subject. Both agricultural and natural host-pathogen situations are addressed. While most of the book focuses on plant pathology, in the usual sense of the term embracing fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens, there is also consideration of parasitic plants and a chapter demonstrating lessons to be learnt from the mammalian immune system. Three overall themes are addressed: genetic analyses and utilization of resistance; population genetics; and cell biology and molecular genetics. Chapters are based on papers presented at the British Society for Plant Pathology Presidential meeting held in December 1995, but all have been revised and updated to mid-1996. Written by leading authorities from North America, Europe and Australia, the book represents an update for workers in plant genetics, breeding, biotechnology and pathology.]

Large 8vo, pp 228, paperback, a good copy. (Not illustrated). {The topics of agronomy, genetics and plant breeding are normally covered in separate volumes. This book provides a comprehensive text combing these areas. The book covers factors involved in, and the practice of, crop production together with details of the production of a number of world crops. There is coverage of the basis of inheritance and the principles of plant breeding and a series of exercises are included which cover the mathematical aspects of genetics and plant breeding. An elementary introduction to experimental design and statistics is followed by several case studies which consolidate the problem solving aspects previously discussed.}
