Sex and Death in Protozoa - the history of an obsession [Sir John Burnett's copy], Bell, Graham
8 Bell, Graham Sex and Death in Protozoa - the history of an obsession [Sir John Burnett's copy]
Reproduction. mortality. genetics. Cambridge University Press 1988 0521361419 / 9780521361415 First Edition Cloth Very Good Very Slightly Worn
Octavo, pp xiv, 199, a very good clean hardback copy in a dustwrapper showing only slight signs of use. { Is ageing inevitable, or can senescence and death be evaded? Large animals and plants always age if they live long enough; even individual cells from their bodies cannot continue living and dividing indefinitely. Whether or not single-celled organisms also age and die, and what relation sex bore to the process of senescence, was the subject of vigorous debate and experimentation early in the last century. In this book, Dr Bell disinters and reanalyzes these forgotten experiments, and argues that protozoan lineages do indeed senesce, as the result of an accumulated load of mutations that can be shed only through sexual reproduction. This unexpected connection between sex and death is the central theme of a book that will interest all students of evolutionary biology, sexuality and senescence.]. [From the library of Sir John Burnett, with his signature on the front endpaper. A distinguished academic career and a lifelong interest in fungi, botany and nature conservation made him the ideal champion for biological recording in the UK. He held that effective nature conservation could be achieved only if good quality information about species and their habitats was accessible to all who needed it - a belief that made him perfectly suited to run the National Biodiversity Network, founded in 2000. He was convinced that academics with high administrative posts must continue with some personal research, in his case on the myxomycetes.]

The Syon Abbey Herbal - the Last Monastic Herbal in England, c. AD 1517. By Thomas Betson, Last Librarian at Syon Abbey, from St John's College, Cambridge Manuscript 109 (E.6), Betson, Thomas. [edited by John Adams and Stuart Forbes]
10 Betson, Thomas. [edited by John Adams and Stuart Forbes] The Syon Abbey Herbal - the Last Monastic Herbal in England, c. AD 1517. By Thomas Betson, Last Librarian at Syon Abbey, from St John's College, Cambridge Manuscript 109 (E.6)
London AMCD Publishers 2015 1897762690 / 9781897762691 Cloth New New
Large thick 8vo, 8 plain plates, pp 376, blue cloth, an excellent copy in dustwrapper. Printing is limited to 500 copies. [The Syon Abbey Herbal was written by Thomas Betson in his notebook, sometime between his profession as a priest-brother at the Bridgettine double monastery of Syon Abbey near London, and his death there in 1517. He is the last recorded Librarian at Syon, and also wrote the still extant Syon Library catalogue. The Syon Abbey Herbal is divided into two main parts - a list of healing plants from Greek, Latin, French and Middle English sources; and a list of remedies from Latin and English sources. One chapter, wholly in latin, is on the use of urine for diagnosis, particularly of women's conditions; another is on herbal essences in distilled alcohol. The appendices include a tentative list of Linnean names for Betson's plants; A list of diseases in the manuscript; and plants at Syon House in 1548, listed by William Turner. This book is a useful contribution to the study of the transition from medieval to early modern medicine. Syon had one of the best equipped late medieval medical libraries in both Britain and Europe. It contained several hundred medical and medical-astrology titles, many unique in Britain to Syon. Almost all of the 1747 volumes in Betson's library are now lost. Only two medical books have ever been found, a Gilbertus Anglicus Compendium Medicinae in English, and an astrological guide.]
