From Another Kingdom - the amazing world of fungi, Boddy, Lynne & Coleman, Max (ed)
2 Boddy, Lynne & Coleman, Max (ed) From Another Kingdom - the amazing world of fungi
2010 1906129673 / 9781906129675 First Edition Paperback New
Well illustrated, quarto, pp 175, paperback, a very good new copy. [This book introduces the fungi and their importance in sustaining all life on Earth. People have had intimate associations with fungi for millennia. Nevertheless, most of us are unaware how heavily we rely on fungi in the form of countless everyday products that use them and the chemicals they produce. Fungi have a long history of association with death, decay and dark malevolent forces. They also cause serious economic loss through diseases of plant crops in particular. They can easily be cast as the ‘monster’. Contrary to this negative image fungi are at the heart of crucial ‘life-support’ processes. For example, decomposition releases nutrients for reuse – fungi really are the ultimate recyclers. Written for the non-specialist, and making full use of the extraordinary diversity and beauty of fungi through stunning images, this book provides a fascinating introduction to a group of organisms whose lifestyle means they remain largely out of sight, overlooked and forgotten. The reality is that there is much for which fungi should be thanked.]

6 Crute, I.R.; Holub, E.B. & Burdon, J.J. (eds) The Gene for Gene Relationship in Plant-Parasite Interactions
Wallingford CAB International 1997 0851991645 / 9780851991641 First Edition Laminated boards Very Good
8vo, pp xiv, 427, a few light pencillings in the text, tiny bumps to the lower corners, otherwise a very good copy. [Genetics has transformed plant pathology on two occasions: first when Mendelian genetics enabled the discovery that disease resistance was a heritable trait in plants, and secondly when Flor proposed the "gene-for-gene" hypothesis to explain his observations of plant-parasite interactions, based on his work on flax rust in North Dakota starting in the 1930s. Our knowledge of the genetics of disease resistance and host-pathogen coevolution is now entering a new phase as a result of the cloning of the first resistance genes. This book provides a broad review of developments in this subject. Both agricultural and natural host-pathogen situations are addressed. While most of the book focuses on plant pathology, in the usual sense of the term embracing fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens, there is also consideration of parasitic plants and a chapter demonstrating lessons to be learnt from the mammalian immune system. Three overall themes are addressed: genetic analyses and utilization of resistance; population genetics; and cell biology and molecular genetics. Chapters are based on papers presented at the British Society for Plant Pathology Presidential meeting held in December 1995, but all have been revised and updated to mid-1996. Written by leading authorities from North America, Europe and Australia, the book represents an update for workers in plant genetics, breeding, biotechnology and pathology.]

Illustrated, pp xviii, 208, very clean internally, blue cloth in very good condition, in a slightly worn and marked dustwrapper. SCARCE. [This text explores the means, processes and mechanisms by which plants change the orientation and juxtapositions of various organs in order to optimize their harvest of energy, and examines the major stumuli which provokes such responses. These interactions are re-described for higher plants through to ferns, fungi and algae, and the text constantly emphasizes the functional significance of particular growth movements to plants in their natural surroundings. This book should be of interest to research students and lecturers in plant physiology; research workers in agriculture and plant biochemistry.]

Teaming With Microbes - a gardener's guide to the soil food web., Lowenfels, Jeff & Lewis, Wayne
20 Lowenfels, Jeff & Lewis, Wayne Teaming With Microbes - a gardener's guide to the soil food web.
Portland Timber Press 2006 0881927775 / 9780881927771 First Edition Cloth Very Good Very Good
Illustrated, octavo, pp 196, a very good copy in a very slightly faded dustwrapper, virtually as new. [Smart gardeners know that soil is anything but an inert substance. Healthy soil is teeming with life not just earthworms and insects, but a staggering multitude of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. When we use chemical fertilizers, we injure the microbial life that sustains healthy plants, and thus become increasingly dependent on an arsenal of artificial, often toxic, substances. But there is an alternative to this vicious cycle. We can garden in a way that strengthens the soil food web the complex world of soil-dwelling organisms whose interactions create a nurturing environment for plants. Teaming with Microbes extols the benefits of cultivating the soil food web. First, it clearly explains the activities and organisms that make up the web. Next, it explains how gardeners can cultivate the life of the soil through the use of compost, mulches, and compost tea. The revised edition updates the original text and includes two completely new chapters on mycorrhizae (beneficial associations fungi form with green-leaved plants) and archaea (single-celled organisms once thought to be allied to bacteria). With Jeff Lowenfels help, everyone from devotees of organic gardening techniques to weekend gardeners who simply want to grow healthy, vigorous plants without resorting to chemicals can create rich, nurturing, living soil.]
