2 CHIN Shui Hiung; Ravi Mandalam & Christopher Chin East Kinabalu - A Guide to the Eastern Part of Mount Kinabalu
Kota Kinabalu Opus Publications 2013 9833987494 / 9789833987498 Pictorial laminated boards New New
Very well illustrated, large 8vo, pp viii, 152, a very good new copy in dustwrapper. [This book is a guide to the remote and rugged eastern part of Mount Kinabalu, the tallest mountain on the island of Borneo. The western part of the mountain is readily accessible by a scrambling trail that has been developed over several decades into a secure track with guard rails, steps and ropes in steeper sections. It attracts thousands of amateur climbers every year. The eastern summit of Kinabalu was scaled for the first time only in 1957 by two British climbers Myles Bowen and Ross Urquhart, a century after the maiden climb to the western summit by Hugh Low in 1851. The steep ascent over sheer cliffs and the rugged terrain continue to limit the number of visitors to East Kinabalu. In this book the authors provide information on the topography of East Kinabalu, four climbing routes, and brief historical information on each route. The routes described are the Bowen’s Route on the south side of the mountain, branching off the tourist trail before the Sayat Sayat rock face and ascending over the Mesilau cliff to the Eastern Plateau; Kotal’s Route from the east side that ascends to the top of the East Ridge from the East Mesilau River and traverses behind and below the Pinnacles to the Eastern Plateau; Bulangga Route from the northwest side of Kinabalu that ascends up from the Penataran River to the top of the North Ridge and thereon to the Eastern Plateau and the East Ridge Route that traverses the entire length of the East Ridge from Poring to Rhino Horn. The book is profusely illustrated with photographs, maps, route profiles and other minutiae.]

3 Clark, Ronald W. Men Myths and Mountains. ("The life and times of mountaineering") (Huxley copy)
London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 1976 First Edition Cloth Good Good
Illustrated, large 8vo, pp viii, 292, clean internally, blue cloth very slightly worn, corners slightly rubbed, bottom edge slightly shelf-worn, in a slightly worn dustwrapper which is not price-clipped. [From the library of Anthony Huxley, with his stamp on the front endpaper. Son of Julian, nephew of Aldous, grandson of Leonard and great-grandson of Thomas Henry - Anthony Huxley was the only member of this towering scientific dynasty to choose botany and horticulture as his career. His earlier writings on mountain flowers reflected his passion for the high ground, and among his forty-odd works there stands his "Standard Encyclopedia of the World's Mountains" of 1962, a classic work notable for its painstaking accuracy. A great chance to obtain a book from a famous provenance. And, by great coincidence, the author of this book - Ronald Clark - also wrote the standard biography of the Huxley family !]

7 Enriquez, Major C.M. Kinabalu - The Haunted Mountain of Borneo: an account of its ascent, its people, flora and fauna
Kota Kinabalu Opus Publications 2008 9833987257 / 9789833987252 Paperback New
Illustrated in black and white, small 8vo, pp xvi, 95, paperback, a very good copy. [First published in 1927, Kinabalu: The Haunted Mountain of Borneo still enthralls readers with the exploits of early-day explorers of Kinabalu. This account follows Enrique’s desire to scale the summit with his trusted companion Sau Nan and a small entourage. Enriquez’s account of his expedition contains some of the most beautifully written passages that portray the starkness and beauty of Kinabalu. He notes that "Kinabalu is a sort of Mecca for naturalists", which still holds true today. An enjoyable read that captures the romance and excitement of discovery. An amateur naturalist, knowledgeable about butterflies and birds, author C.M. Enriquez concocted a two-month itinerary to collect butterfly and other specimens on Kinabalu, when his adventures began.

East Kinabalu - Royal Society Expeditions 40th Anniversary Monograph, Ravi Mandalam, K.; Davison, G.W.H. & Regis, Patricia
12 Ravi Mandalam, K.; Davison, G.W.H. & Regis, Patricia East Kinabalu - Royal Society Expeditions 40th Anniversary Monograph
Kota Kinabalu The Sabah Society 2005 9679994791 / 9789679994797
Illustrated, large 8vo, pp x, 144, paperback, a very good copy. [This Sabah Society Monograph is devoted to commemorating 40 years since the Royal Society Expeditions to Mount Kinabalu. which was declared a national park in 1964. The Royal Society Expeditions (RSE) of 1961 and 1964 took place when Sabah was in transition from a British administered colony to an independent state within the Malaysian Federation. The First RSE was the last of a long series of major scientific expeditions undertaken during the colonial era. The First RSE was also the first team to undertake an exploration of the long and difficult Eastern Ridge of Kinabalu. All previous explorations of the mountain had focussed on its western side. The same Expedition was also the first to explore the Pinosuk Plateau, on which thrived a unique forest at 5000 ft, on rocky detritus washed down from the mountain. Sadly, this forest does not exist any more, as it was cleared in the 1980s to make way for the Agricultural Station and the Golf Course. Kotal, a Dustin hunter hailing from Kg. Kundasang, was the first to pioneer a route to King George V Peak(the summit above the Eastern Plateau) in June 1963. Corner engaged his services as the chief guide for the Second RSE in 1964. It was he who guided John Corner and, later, Gathorne Medway (now Earl of Cranbrook) to the summit. Kotal was a silent and enigmatic personality. In Corner’s words, "He is the class of Dusun as silent. rugged and detached as a granite pinnacle". Kotal guided many subsequent expeditions through the same route that now bears his name. He passed away in 1998. The names of many peaks and pinnacles on Kinabalu East - the Eastern Plateau and the North and East Ridges, such as Gully Peak, Outpost, North Peak, Lion’s Rock, Echoing Rocks, Rhino Horn, etc., were given by John Corner himself which are in current use in mountaineering literature on Kinabalu and referred to by climbers who frequent this mountain. ]

Kota Kinabalu 2013 9838121428 / 9789838121422 First Edition. Pictorial laminated boards Good Very Good
Well illustrated, large horizontal quarto, pp vii, 152, (there is a slight production fault affecting pages 5 - 16 : a slight tear on the inner margins of those pages), otherwise a very good copy in dustwrapper. Weighs over 2 kilos before packing - extra postage will be necessary. [Absolutely stunning photography. Mount Kinabalu (4095 m) in the East Malaysian state of Sabah on the island of Borneo is the highest mountain between the Himalayas and the mountains of New Guinea, as well as the most biodiverse place on earth for its size with an unparalleled ecology with many endemic species. Scientific research undertaken over the last 160 years has recorded over 5500 plant species comprising over 200 plant families in an area roughly 30×40 km in size, making it truly a ‘pinnacle of biodiversity’. Mount Kinabalu also has the richest orchid flora in the world. Half of all Borneo’s birds, mammals, reptilian species and amphibian species including many rare and endangered species occur on Mount Kinabalu; these include approximately 90 species of lowland mammals and 22 montane mammal species and 326 bird species. The Park was established in 1964, and includes Mount Kinabalu, and the little-known Mount Tambuyukon (2579 m), the highest ultramafic mountain in Asia. As a World Heritage Site, Kinabalu Park is also the most important tourism ‘hotspot’ in Sabah with close to 500,000 visitors annually, of whom about 10% make it to the highest point in Borneo, a tough 2-day climb.]

19 Wong, K.M. & Chan, C.L. Kinabalu - The Natural History, Ecology and Biodiversity of a World Heritage Mountain
Kota Kinabalu 2015 9838121584 / 9789838121583 First Edition Paperback New
Very well illustrated, small slim 8vo, pp xviii, 162, paperback, a very good new copy. [For very many explorers, naturalists and conservationists, there is no parallel to the spectacular Kinabalu and its special biological richness. During its genesis, this geologically young mountain attained remarkable height to over 4000 m, and has weathered climate change episodes through millenia that ranged from ice-capped peaks to today’s largely bare granitic summit area. The mountain has an impressive array of natural communities dispersed over a complex formation of rock types and topography, across an impressive elevation gradient from tropical, through temperate, to polar climatic regimes. The precipitous topography has kept many places unexplored and most ecological assemblages and organisms are only beginning to be better studied.]
