RECENT ORNITHOLOGICAL LITERATURE, 1983-1998, (being a supplement to The Auk, The Emu and The Ibis). {Richard Fitter's copies}
1 RECENT ORNITHOLOGICAL LITERATURE, 1983-1998, (being a supplement to The Auk, The Emu and The Ibis). {Richard Fitter's copies}
Paperback Good
A long run of this publication, which rarely appears for sale. A major reference to recent bird taxonomy and research. Only the last issue in this run is actually numbered (issue 75), but I am assuming that what we have here are issues 27 - 75. Publication was, at times, slightly erratic, but I am offering : 1983 (parts 1 - 4), 1984 (1 - 4), 1985 (1 - 4), 1986 (1 - 4), 1987 (1 - 4), 1988 (1 - 4), 1989 (1 - 4), 1990 (1 - 4), 1991 (1 - 4), 1992 (1 - 3), 1994 (1 part), 1995 (2 parts), 1996 (3 parts), 1997 (4 parts), 1998 (1 part). I suspect that these are all actually consecutive, despite the erratic issuing, but can not guarantee this. Slightly worn overall, a few staples rusty, and a few covers slightly marked. [From the library of the naturalist and conservationist Richard Fitter, with his stamp on a few of the issues.]

The Exultant Ark - a pictorial tour of animal pleasure, Balcombe, Jonathan
11 Balcombe, Jonathan The Exultant Ark - a pictorial tour of animal pleasure
Berkeley University of California Press 2011 0520260244 / 9780520260245 Cloth As New Very Good
Very well illustrated, quarto, pp x, 214, a very good copy in a dustwrapper showing only the very faintest signs of use. [Nature documentaries often depict animal life as a grim struggle for survival, but this visually stunning book opens our eyes to a different, more scientifically up-to-date way of looking at the animal kingdom. In more than one hundred thirty striking images, "The Exultant Ark" celebrates the full range of animal experience with dramatic portraits of animal pleasure ranging from the charismatic and familiar to the obscure and bizarre. These photographs, windows onto the inner lives of pleasure seekers, show two polar bears engaged in a bout of wrestling, hoary marmots taking time for a friendly chase, Japanese macaques enjoying a soak in a hot spring, a young bull elk sticking out his tongue to catch snowflakes, and many other rewarding moments. Biologist and best-selling author Jonathan Balcombe is our guide, interpreting the images within the scientific context of what is known about animal behavior. In the end, old attitudes fall away as we gain a heightened sense of animal individuality and of the pleasures that make life worth living for all sentient beings.]

A History of Ornithology (New Naturalist 104), Bircham, Peter
16 Bircham, Peter A History of Ornithology (New Naturalist 104)
London Collins 2007 0007199694 / 9780007199693 First Edition Hard Cover New New
FIRST EDITION. Illustrated, pp xii, 482, an excellent copy in dustwrapper. [Today the RSPB has over one million members, reflecting the huge interest in birdwatching as a hobby. Over the years the growth in amateur birdwatchers has contributed enormously to our understanding of bird life, behaviour and populations. But what did we know about birds a thousand years ago and how has our understanding developed? Which species did we recognise, and when did people begin to record their sightings? Peter Bircham looks at the history of British ornithology from 1066 to the mid-1970s, exploring along the way the first bird book, the first British lists, the collectors, the first studies of migration, changes to the classification of species, the birth of the British Ornithologists' Union in 1858, to our current understanding of ornithology in Britain today. Peter has written an extremely authoritative and engrossing account, full of fascinating stories and extracts from poems and journals, which should appeal to the wider birding community as well as the New Naturalist audience.]
