1 AMATEUR WORK ILLUSTRATED - a practical magazine of constructive and decorative art and manual labour, with supplements containing designs and working drawings to scale for varoious pieces of work, useful and ornamental, & several hundreds of illustrations
London Ward, Lock, Bowden & Co Cloth Good
Volumes 1 - 7, popular re-issue. Not dated, but probably c. 1892 -5 (though the British Library lists seven volumes of this edition, and dates it 1881-88). One of the most elusive of all late Victorian journals for the keen handyman. This set is bound in a simple brown cloth which is a little marked worn and frayed, but generally still very sound, though the spine head of volume two is rather torn, and a hinge cracked in volume five. The contents are generally clean, though the folding plans and plates are ofter printed on an inferior paper which has browned, as have the adjoining pages. There are approximately 24 of these folding plates, and they have all suffered some tearing, though generally not with any loss of text. Two of them are detached, and at least one is now in two halves. Several have been repaired at a much earlier time. I have noticed the odd page loose here and there, but generally the contents are very sound. This work was quite possibly bound up from separately issued parts, and I note that a couple of pages are missing at the start of Volume 1, (and these appear never to have been bound in). Apart from this I believe it to be complete. [An amazingly encyclopaedic survey of the Victorian industrial/arts& crafts world. A sample of the breadth of information can be gleaned from an extract from the index : Artificial ivory, electricity in bee-keeping, boat-building made easy, boots & shoes : how to make and mend them, brilliant red ink for draughtsmen, cutting glass with a hot iron, electric bells, a mahgnesium flash lamp, gas in the amateur's workshop, metallic designs on glass, gymnastic apparatus and how to make it, how to build a small harmonium, luminous paints, modelling in clay, organ building for amateurs, photographic pastimes, practical gas-fitting, the manufacture of spectacle lenses, sundials and dialling, velocipedes - their construction and use, walking sticks, some hints on conjuring apparatus, smithing and forging, pantograph extraordinary, my marionette theatre, magic-lantern slides, bamboo-work, beehives etc.]

Well illustrated, large 8vo, pp 148, paperback, a very good copy. [Wych Elm is a celebration of a quintessentially British tree. This book describes in detail for the first time the ecological and cultural history of a tree species ravaged by Dutch elm disease but still thriving in its last European stronghold in the Highlands and West coast of Scotland. In a fascinating story of life, death and rebirth this book shows how every part of the wych elm can be recycled, both in nature and the hands of skilled craftspeople, earning it the title of the phoenix tree.]

The Tradition of Fine Bookbinding in the Twentieth Century : Catalogue of an Exhibition, 1979-1980, Callery, Bernadette G. & Mosimann, Elizabeth A. (eds)
16 Callery, Bernadette G. & Mosimann, Elizabeth A. (eds) The Tradition of Fine Bookbinding in the Twentieth Century : Catalogue of an Exhibition, 1979-1980
Pittsburgh Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation 1979 0913196282 / 9780913196281 First Edition Cloth-backed boards Very Good
Well illustrated, tall slim quarto, pp 129, very clean internally, cloth-backed boards very slightly bumped, spine very slightly marked, otherwise a very good copy. [The preface states "The Tradition of Fine Bookbinding in the Twentieth Century" explores the tension that results from modern craftsmen working in a traditional craft. The twentieth century binder must always contend with traditions of binding structure, material and cover design, and this conflict is compounded when facing the re-binding of an older book. We have attempted to gather representative examples of what we see as the two major divisions of modem binding : the traditional or retrospective approach, and the modem design or intuitive approach where the design is intended to be an expressive extension of the book within. Such distinctions are somewhat arbitrary, and the binders are even less easily categorized than their bindings. Retrospective bindings need not be restrictively imitative. And binders frequently look to historical styles for inspiration even when creating new designs that reflect the artistic tastes of the twentieth century. The requirements of the book itself should also determine some aspects of the binding. All works of value deserve a careful choice of conservation binding techniques. The exquisite twentieth century livre d'artiste and the primary scientific source of the eighteenth century demand equal respect, though different design considerations. Our survey includes selected original examples of major historical styles, countered with a variety of twentieth century bindings, both modem and retrospective. By grouping the bindings according to style, we hope to demonstrate relationships in design and technique which suggest that no modem binder is beyond tradition."]
