1843 - 1844, First edition. Two volumes, quarto, with 96 hand-coloured lithographic plates, pp x, 190; x, 168, (ii), with the half-titles, bound in a simple half calf and pebbled cloth (probably dating from 1890/1900?). There is a signature and date on each title page (John Chichester, 1906). The contents are slightly age-toned generally; the plates have creases to the outer margins (caused by regular turning), and about 13 have slight spotting or marking (often only a single spot); there are small marginal tears to four or five text pages and three further text pages which are bumped and creased in the lower corner. There is a bad tear to the blank sheet facing plate 93. There is offsetting from six plates (from plate to text or blank) and often this affects the pages on either side of the plate. Plate 49 has a crease to its upper corner, Plates 4 and 21 are creased at the inner amrgin, Plate 39 has a small marginal tear, Plate 45 is creased, and with printed surface damage by adherence from the opposing blank. Several plates in the first volume are bound out of order; more importantly, two plates have at some time, and in an earlier binding, become loose. They are now firmly bound in but in the wrong place ! - Plate 17, which should be at page 70 is now bound directly opposite plate 13, it is badly creased at the outer margins, with tears and old paper repairs; Plate 62, which should be at page 56 but is now at end of the text before the index, is very frayed and repaired along the inner margin. The dark green calf is rubbed but sound, the spines faded, the cloth sides are quite blotched. Despite the faults, this is still quite a presentable copy, and a chance to obtain a scarce work at a reasonable price, This first edition is preferable to the second as it has six more plates.
