[Japanese botanist Bunz Hayata is known as the founding father of Taiwanese botany. He spent more than 20 years studying the flora of the island, naming some 1,600 taxa of Taiwanese vascular plants. As well as his taxonomic work, he studied pollination biology, and plant distribution and succession in Taiwan and Japan. Interestingly, he did not accept Darwin's theory of evolution, and proposed his own system of species classification, entitled the 'Dynamic System'. This placed special attention on the stele as a morphological feature.]
